Mick Moloney's Cultural Tours

Journey Through Ulster

May 28th - June 6th, 2017

Our tour will begin in beautiful Carlingford in County Louth at the foot of the Cooley Ridge, the starting point of The Tain, Ireland's famous mythological saga that embroiled the provinces of Connaught and Ulster in savage warfare. Across Carlingford Lough looms the Mourne Mountains in County Down, home to the famed Sands Family who will regale you as you visit their hometown of Rostrevor. You'll visit the ancient monastery of Monasterboice with its magnificent Round Tower and High Crosses and the renowned passage tomb of Newgrange, the political and ritual center of the area over five thousand years ago.

Your first lodging will be the lovely Ballymacscanlon Hotel. There will be an extended visit to the great city of Belfast, once racked by sectarian warfare and now one of the most progressive and lively cities in Europe. You'll visit the Titanic Museum that presents in extraordinary and entertaining fashion the building of the ill-fated luxury liner. You'll visit the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum and view its provocative outdoor and indoor exhibits and displays. You'll have a special opportunity to meet with people actively involved in Northern Ireland's exemplary Peace Process and learn about the complex background to one of the longest ethnic conflicts in the world.

You'll travel along the beautiful Antrim coastline and visit the Corrameela Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, Dunluce Castle (the stately home of the McDonald Clan), and the Giants Causeway, one of the world's most impressive UNESCO heritage sites. You will stay in the City Hotel in the great city of Derry, now the last walled city in Europe, and walk the walls with a local activist who will explain its cultural and historical significance to both political traditions. You'll visit the magnificent Grianan of Aileach nearby in Donegal, which shares the dual identities of ancient fortification and ritual center. Then for two days you'll stay on the Gaelic speaking Tory Island lodging in the island hotel and in local home housing. You'll have the rare chance to explore one of the most remote and isolated cultures in Western Europe, exceptional for its long standing tradition of kingship. You will meet the unique primitive painters who work in a style found only on Tory, but now well known and prized in art circles throughout Europe.

After your return to the mainland, you will visit the famed Beleek China factory in Fermanagh and end the journey in Cavan where you will explore the county's hidden cultural and historic gems while staying in the beautiful Errigal House Hotel in Cootehill. You'll also visit the County Museum in Ballyjamesduff where you will tour Europe's finest reconstruction of World War I trenches offering a dramatic portrayal of the hardships endured by all soldiers in that savage conflict. Each evening is brought to a close with exhilarating private concerts and sessions featuring Mick and outstanding traditional musicians, singers and dancers from all over the country.

"In 2001 we discovered Mick's tours, the perfect answer to our needs. Since then we have participated in four more of Mick's tours involving many areas of Ireland's rich heritage we would have never considered exploring on our own. And to have a music concert every evening with Mick and the finest of traditional musicians was a crowning glory!" -- John T. Comerford, MD
